Peterborough – a missed opportunity for Hull Trains?

-

THE editor’s interview (RM April) with Louise Cheeseman of Hull Trains was interesting.

But it is a pity – and maybe a missed opportunity – none of these trains call at in either direction at Peterborough, the only connectional point for the whole of East Anglia and trains to the Home Counties north of London.

The demand is clearly there: an afternoon train from Leeds can drop up to a third of its passengers at Peterborough to connect with other trains.

While this might add five minutes running time, Peterborough could be exchanged for the very much less useful Grantham, which in any event has a minimum of two LNER trains per hour each way.

Calling at Peterborough would make sense for the reasons Mr Foster says and open up many new journey options, but I suspect there would be objections from other long-distance operators over ‘revenue extraction’. When the future of franchising is known, there may be an opening for such a station call – Ed.
