Mardy Monster moves on to the market

-

FORMER Maerdy Colliery Peckett ‘OQ’ 0-6-0ST Mardy Monster (2150/1954) has been put up for sale through Advanced Engineering Services (AES) South Yorkshire Ltd.

The 18in-cylindered loco – often reputed to be the most powerful preserved industrial locomotive – last ran in 2014.

It has subsequently been the subject of a 10-yearly overhaul at the Elsecar Heritage Railway, which is reported to be nearly complete.

Much of the work on the bottom end has been completed, including tyre turning, axle boxes re-brassed, new crank pins and a new ash pan. The horn guides, coupling and connecting rods and brasses, brake gear, have also been fully overhauled.

The boiler has been the subject of an extensive overhaul by Locomotive Maintenance Services at Loughborough, with this returning to Elsecar in 2017.

The outstanding work required to complete the overhaul includes fitting the connecting and coupling rods, oil and steam pipework to be installed, brick arch built in the firebox, a final steam test and some cosmetic work.

Serious enquiries should be made to Stuart Palmer at AES South Yorkshire on 07738 981326 or by emailing smpalmer248@gmail.com
