Talyllyn overhaul progress

- KEITH FENDER

THE frames of the Talyllyn Railway’s (TR) Fletcher, Jennings 0-4-2ST No. 1 Talyllyn, the boiler of which is being overhauled at Ropley, have been moved from Pendre works to a unit on the nearby industrial estate, where work will continue.

The rear brake rigging is being redesigned while the cylinders have been sent away for fitting of replacement liners and skimming of the valve faces. The boiler is pictured in the Mid-Hants Railway’s Ropley boiler shop on March 7.

Work on the boiler is being undertaken by TR volunteers employed at Ropley. It offers a significant contrast in size with the boiler from standard gauge ‘Merchant Navy’ Pacific No. 35005 Canadian Pacific to the right of the frame!
