New look for York station forecourt
LEEDS City Region has secured £14million in funding to help remodel the area around York’s station forecourt.
The scheme is part of the wider £650m York Central redevelopment of the area around the station, and will see the demolition of the Queen Street Bridge, better provision for bus services and the relocation of a short-stay car park and taxi rank to provide a more fitting gateway to the city.
Arches in the city walls opposite the station, originally knocked through to provide access to York’s first railway station, which later became a parcels depot, will also be opened up creating new routes for pedestrians and cyclists.
City of York Council secured £77.1m in Government funding in the budget to unlock the scheme and begin work, which will include the redevelopment of land around the station and National Railway Museum for housing and offices as well as a new central hall and entrance for the museum.
