LNER stands down Class 91s – some to be spares donors

-

LNER has taken a number of Class 91s out of service following the dramatic decline in rail travel as a result of the Covid-19 situation.

No. 91116 was sidelined on April 10, and was hauled by GBRf No. 66779 for storage at the Doncaster Rail Mail terminal with classmates Nos. 91104, 91112, 91113 and 91129.

The ‘66’ then moved the Mk4 set to Worksop for storage.

Record holder No. 91131, which as

No. 91031 Sir Henry Royce attained 154.1mph with a specially shortened Mk4 rake, was added to the stored line at Doncaster on April 18.

At Bounds Green, several other

Class 91s are in a siding awaiting either spare parts or workshop attention, and it is expected some of the stored locos could become spares donors.

LNER is retaining a fleet of 12 Class 91 locos for its East Coast routes until 2023.

?? CHRIS BOOTH ?? GBRf No. 66779 brought No. 91116 and a Mk4 rake to Doncaster on April 10 and then took the carriages via the South Yorkshire Joint Line to Worksop for storage. The train is seen passing Tickhill.
