Funds needed for works car restoration

- COMPILED BY GRAEME PICKERING

MANCHESTER’S Heaton Park Tramway has launched the first in a series of fundraising campaigns to help it make progress with work on restoring vehicles which are currently out of use.

Its initial appeal, launched in early July, has a target of £15,000 to return Blackpool Works Car

No. 1 (formerly numbered 752) to working order.

No. 1, which has been out of service for a number of years, requires motor repairs, rewiring, waterproofing and painting. Although much of this can be done by the tramway’s volunteers, the money is needed to cover the cost of specialist attention to the motors and the purchase of materials for the car’s refurbishment.

Acquired in 2008 by Manchester Transport Museum Society, No. 1, which dates from the 1920s, had been used as a rail grinder by Blackpool

Transport. Once restored, it’s envisaged that it will return to use on tramway maintenance duties at Heaton Park.

More details of the appeal can be found at: gofund. me/4f54de37. Any surplus funds will be allocated for future projects.
