TUNNEL NAVVY MEMORIAL UNVEILED:

- QUEENSBURY TUNNEL SOCIETY

Campaigners hoping to reopen a disused West Yorkshire railway tunnel as part of cycle route have installed a memorial to the 10 men known to have died during its construction. Queensbury Tunnel, on the former GNR line between Bradford Exchange and

Halifax, took four years to build from 1874 to 1878. The Queensbury Tunnel Society has now erected a memorial to the men who died, comprising two rows of five wooden railway sleepers that stand either side of the path linking the Great Northern Railway Trail to the tunnel entrance. The materials were mostly donated by the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. The tunnel itself has been earmarked for partial infilling on safety grounds, but Bradford

Council has commissioned Sustrans to develop options for cycling routes connecting Bradford, Keighley and Halifax.
