Minister responds to public call for a debate on HS2

-

ANDREW Stephenson, the minister with responsibility for HS2, has told MPs he is “more than happy” to meet with them to discuss concerns over the project. Responding to a parliamentary debate of a petition urging an immediate halt to work, Mr Stephenson replied: “I know that HS2 is a project that inspires strong feelings on all sides, as do all major infrastructure projects.” He added that all MPs present were aware that the Government had “very carefully considered the merits of proceeding”. Mr Stephenson continued:

“In setting out this decision to proceed, we made a clear commitment to draw a line under past problems. This is a once in a generation major infrastructure project which will shape this country for well over a hundred years, showcasing our skills in engineering and construction.” The online petition, which also called on parliament to repeal legislation authorising the project, claiming decisions were based on misleading information, attracted 155,252 signatures during the six months it was active.
