92 Squadron almost ready for action

-

IT IS hoped the Battle of Britain Locomotive Society’s Bulleid Pacific No. 34081 92 Squadron can return to service imminently at the Nene Valley Railway (NVR). As previously reported, the loco was despatched to Locomotive Maintenance Services in Loughborough on April 30 after thinning was discovered on top of the inner box by the thermic syphons.

New fusible plug inserts and stays have been made and fitted, while platework has been cut out and replaced.

The 4-6-2 returned to Wansford on September 10. Five days later, it was reunited with its tender. As this issue went to press, the cab, which has received a refresh at a private site, was due back at the NVR. Final reassembly was due to follow an insurance steam test ahead of running in.

Meanwhile, the overhaul of BR ‘5MT’ 4-6-0 No. 73050 City of Peterborough has reached the reassembly stage. On the bottom-end, some of the 1500 components are now being reattached.

Inside the frames, the pipework is growing backwards from the buffer beam and the front sandbox is in place. Work on the horn stays is nearing completion and, at the rear of the loco, temporary studs and nuts are holding the drag box firmly in place. Rivets are being made and bought, and it’s hoped that final fit will be undertaken shortly.

The measurements of the horn liner and thrust faces have been completed, and procurement of a further two replacement thrust faces is in progress, as are gaskets for the main and piston valve cylinder covers. Work continues in component overhaul, with lubricators, cab windows, cylinder relief valves and drain cocks receiving attention.

Recent work on returning Danish 0-6-0T No. 656 ‘Tinkerbell’ to traffic has included installing a brick arch and ashpan.

The walls and floor inside Wansford running shed have been deep cleaned and painted. Walkways down the side of the locos are now clear, improving safety and making the operation of organised shed tours easier.

The boiler repairs for 92 Squadron have cost in the region of £40,000. Donations can be made online at www.92squadron.co.uk or by post to: BBLS treasurer, c/o 47 Gonville Crescent, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, SG2 9LY.
