‘VANGUARD’ 4WDH FRESH FROM OVERHAUL AT CHASEWATER:

-

Thos Hill 111C of 1961 – the ‘C’ suffix indicating it was a diesel conversion from a Sentinel vertical boiler geared steam loco – is seen in the evening sun at the Chasewater Railway on Friday, June 13. This loco has been overhauled by Phil Civil, the award-winning owner of Bagnall 0-4-0DH Myfanwy. As well as a rewire, it has received a replacement diesel engine which had originally been used as a standby generator in an industrial unit in Digbeth, Birmingham. This is the original livery it carried when with The Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Co. Ltd, Darlington, but with the addition of the lettering, the original being completely blank. ■ Another ‘Vanguard’ 4wDH arrived at Chasewater in June, from the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. This is Megan (Thos Hill 103C, a 1960 diesel conversion of Sentinel 4wVBGT 9390 of 1949).
