No evidence of call before crossing collision

-

AN investigation by the RAIB into a collision between a GB Railfreight Class 66 and a farm tractor with a trailer, has been unable to find any evidence of a request to use the crossing by the driver of the tractor.

The accident at Kisby user worked crossing between March and Whittlesea on August 19, involved a container train from Felixstowe hauled by No. 66754

Northampton Saints.

The train driver suffered minor injuries, however the locomotive suffered significant structural damage during the accident. Level crossing and track equipment was also extensively damaged.

The trailer was dragged along by the train, and the leading axle of the locomotive and an unladen wagon in the middle of the train were derailed, finally stopping some 780 metres after the impact point.

There was also significant damage to a half-mile of track and the bus cross-country line was closed for four days for recovery of the train and track and infrastructure repairs.
