Soham on track for December opening
A MILESTONE in the construction of a new station at Soham, Cambridgeshire, was completed over the August bank holiday weekend, when the new signalling connections were completed and tested.
Situated on the line between Ely and Chippenham Jct, near Kennett, the aim is for an opening at the December timetable change. Built on the site of the town’s previous station – which was almost demolished on June 2, 1944 when an ammunition train exploded – Soham station was closed in September 1965 and subsequently demolished.
Funded by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, and costing £18.6m, the completion of the station will mark the culmination of a long campaign to reintroduce services for the Soham community.
The new station, which has been taking shape over the last 12 months, has the platform in place on the single line and a footbridge will be installed for an existing right of way, but also for a potential second platform and doubling to Ely. A car park will accommodate just over 50 vehicles.
Services will be part of Greater Anglia’s operation between Ipswich and Peterborough.
