VLR vehicle undergoes trials
HAVING undergone initial testing at Quinton Rail Technology Centre at Long Marston, Revolution VLR’s demonstration Very Light Rail Vehicle moved to Ironbridge on September 6 for further trials. Revolution is a consortium comprising Transport Design International (TDI), leasing firm Eversholt Rail, the Rail Safety & Standards Board, the University of Warwick, engine manufacturer Cummins, rail interior supplier Transcal and vehicle technology specialist RDM Group. The consortium announced the completion of the vehicle in August. It is of a modular design, constructed from carbon fibre and powered by a hybrid diesel-electric engine, using automotive technology, with a maximum speed of 65mph. A lithium titanate battery pack provides capability to operate emissions-free in stations and on the move at up to 20 mph. In its current configuration, the VLR has capacity for 56 seated passengers. The concept will be marketed for potential use on branch lines, extensions and formerly disused routes which are being reopened. Demonstrations to potential sponsors and operators are expected to take place during October.
