Class 93 testing expected next year

-

RAIL Operations Group (ROG) expects factory testing of the first of its new Class 93 tri-mode locomotives to begin next summer. Work on the frames of the prototype, No. 93001, is due to start at Stadler’s Valencia factory in November. It should be ready for delivery in late 2022 or early 2023, with 93002 expected to follow around two months later. ROG anticipates that once deliveries of the remainder of the fleet (Nos. 93003-93030) get underway, they should arrive at a rate of two a month. In addition to operating in electric mode, the Class 93s will have a diesel power unit and batteries, which can be used for shunting movements as well as providing power to assist the diesel engine. With a maximum speed of 110mph, ROG says the Class 93 will provide a new lower emissions option for duties ranging from express passenger and freight to engineering and network monitoring workings.
