Irish Rail opens its 145th station on the national network
Pelletstown is the first new station to open since 2013.
THE all-new Pelletstown station in northwest Dublin was due to officially open on September 26, becoming the newest stopping point to open on the Iarnród Éireann-Irish Rail (IÉ) network since 2013.
The station lies between Ashtown and Broombridge on the Dublin to Maynooth/ M3 Parkway line and has been constructed to serve the nearby community of Ashington together with a new development at Royal Canal Park. Pelletstown will be served by up to 94 trains each day, Monday to Friday, and offers a 12-minute journey time to and from the city centre.
Two platforms with small waiting shelters have been provided that are linked by a footbridge with accessible ramp access. A second footbridge has also been built over the adjacent Royal Canal; the two bridges helping to improve connectivity between Ashington and Royal Canal Park, while at the same time providing direct access onto the Canal Greenway.
The greenway is popular with both pedestrians and cyclists, and consequently Pelletstown is equipped with bicycle storage.
Funding for the station was provided by the National Transport Authority and levies collected by Dublin City Council from the Royal Canal Park development. It was constructed for IÉ by Sisk and is the first new station to open on the network since Oranmore opened in 2013.
