KiwiRail loco goes for a swim

-

NEW ZEALAND rail operator KiwiRail briefly lost one of its fleet on September 1, when a loco fell into the sea!

BoBo diesel No. DSJ 4004 ended up 10 metres under water in Picton Harbour when it ran away while being remotely driven. Nobody was hurt, but a wagon carrying chemicals followed it off the train ferry linkspan and into the harbour. The loco was brought back to dry land on September 3, using airbags and two 300 tonne cranes. The wagon was recovered the day before, fortunately without any major pollution from its cargo or the loco’s fuel.
