Off-hand joke led to shop’s 21st anniversary

-

Monday, August 23 was a special day for Barrow -in-Furness based Crafty Hobbies, as it celebrated its 21st anniversary. Celebrations lasted a week with a daily special cake sent by Thomas’ Bakery and balloons provided by For Any Occasion. Owners Shelagh Morrall and John Hambler started the business selling dolls’ houses and accessories on a single market stall, quickly moving onto a double unit, then, after six years relocated into the premises they have now occupied for the past 15 years. Railways came along in response to customer demand. The owners’ association with the company can be traced back to a remark from John, said in jest about buying the business from the retiring stallholders 21 years ago, before making a serious offer. Although having no real business experience at the time it led to an exciting journey. While a limited edition wagon is commissioned from Dapol annually, this year’s offering is a OO gauge open wagon in the livery of T.F. Butler, which is due for release in the coming weeks.
