Steam celebrations

-

NOW that Pendennis Castle and Clun Castle have both been restored to working order, I wonder if any thought has been given to what could be done in 2024 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the famous speed run on May 9, 1964. This will be the last round number anniversary at which it would be possible to get together a reasonable number of people who were on that train. I am aware that Vintage Trains ran a

commemorative event in 2014, but this was definitely aimed at people from the Birmingham area.

Ideally there should be three special trains on successive Saturdays, with Vintage Trains, UK Railtours and Pathfinder Tours each running a train so that people from the Birmingham, London and West of England areas would all be catered for.

Also, as the event in 1964 was on the 60th anniversary of the famous run with City of Truro in 1904, perhaps the NRM could consider putting that locomotive into working order for the occasion?

The commemorative runs could be to a heritage railway at which City of Truro

would be operating, such as the South Devon Railway, the Dartmouth Steam Railway, or the West Somerset Railway. John Humphrey

Sevenoaks THE silver jubilee of King George V was marked in 1935 by the production and naming of 191 ‘Jubilee’ Class locomotives by the LMS. I would like to learn what plans the railway industry has to mark the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022? Might I also suggest a ‘gathering’ of the four remaining ‘Jubilees’ to honour the Queen’s 70 years as monarch at some point during the year? John Grimley Toronto, Canada
