Dive-under opens

THE Werrington Tunnel dive-under, which carries passenger and freight trains underneath the East Coast Main Line north of Peterborough, was officially opened on December 9. It has been built to ease congestion and avoid conflicting moves on the ECML. Its construction saw a UK-first as the 11,000-tonne curved concrete tunnel was slid into place under the existing railway in January 2021.
