FROM THE RM NOVEMBER 1897 ISSUE

“The Midland Railway’s proposed [main line to the north through Bradford] would shorten its route from London to Scotland by some 22 miles. Leaving the present main line at Roystone [sic], a few miles north of Barnsley, it would pass through Thornhill Junction, Heckmondwike, Cleckheaton, Low Moor and Bowling to the existing Midland station at Bradford.

"One of the difficulties is obtaining an entrance into Bradford; but the Midland has decided to tunnel for a considerable distance near the city to bring the line to a junction with the existing railway in as short a length as practicable after passing through Bradford. The line will pass underground at a point very near Oakenshaw and not be open to the daylight again until emerging on the eastern side of the present Midland station after passing under Forster Square. The tunnel will evidently be from two to three miles long.”
