Society objects to canopy removal

-

BEVERLEY Civic Society is objecting to the removal of a Victorian timber canopy over a railway footbridge at Beverley station. The society says that the Grade II listed bridge has suffered from a lack of maintenance over the years and is concerned at the loss of a “unique period structure”. In planning documents, Network Rail admits that taking the canopy down will significantly affect the appearance of the bridge, but that the structure is failing and that the removal is “unavoidable” having considered other options.

The bridge is likely to have gone up in 1884, with the canopy – which is thought to be the only example of its design – added around five years later.
