Boiler and chassis work on course for Swanage ‘T3’
WORK to return the Swanage Railway Trust’s LSWR ‘T3’ No. 563 to steam, continues to progress on multiple fronts.
The new copper inner firebox has been removed from the boiler barrel after a trial fit. The bushes which will enable the use of the smallest size stays – therefore extending the life of the firebox to the maximum possible – have now been welded into place in the throat plate and backhead and should enable the boiler to be finished in the coming weeks. The next task will be the permanent installation of the inner firebox followed by the laborious and expensive task of drilling and fitting all of the stays and fitting the tubes.
The tender has moved from its undercover accommodation at Imrey’s siding to Norden to enable its restoration in Herston Works to start.
In addition to the smokebox, which has been remade to original specifications and kindly sponsored by a supporter, substantial progress has been made on refitting the valve gear between the frames and reriveting the compensated spring hangers for the driving wheels ahead of refitting the wheels.
As part of the approach of ensuring No. 563 returns in the best possible mechanical condition, it has been decided to fit four new springs to the front bogie as the originals are of unknown age and service life.
With the team at the Flour Mill rapidly progressing towards rewheeling the loco, an order for these springs will need to be placed promptly. Four for the bogie, plus a spare will be required at a cost of £2184.60 each. It estimated that around £200,000 is required to finish the restoration of the locomotive.
