Planet loco set for Vale of Berkeley

-

A PLANET 4wDM diesel, which has been out of use at the Dean Forest Railway (DFR) for several years, has been bought by a

Vale of Berkeley Railway (VoBR) member and is due to relocate across the River Severn shortly.

Prior to preservation, No. 3947 of 1960 worked at Dow Corning, Barry. It was operational at the DFR until it developed some issues.

New owner Andrew Woodhall, a retired GP, told The RM: “It is sort of operational. It has been owned by a consortium of DFR members for the last 20 years. A fellow VoBR member, who also volunteers at the DFR, learned that it was for sale and felt it would be a useful addition to the VoBR fleet. I offered to buy it subject to a restoration and operation agreement being in place. I will pay for the work, which will be carried out by volunteers, and the railway will get the use of the loco for 10 years.

“It is an ideal little shunter for ferrying materials up and down the sidings at Sharpness, but will be refurbished in the shed during the coming year.”

Dr Woodhall said the loco is to retain its mid Brunswick green livery.
