Seldom used Far North stations get ‘request kiosks’

-

SCOTRAIL has begun preparations to install eight ‘request to stop kiosks’ on the

Far North Line, eliminating the need for a hand signal to the driver. The move is part of a £5m package of improvements to the line’s radio signalling system.

The kiosks – basically a timetable display showing the next service – have a request button, which when pressed, will alert the driver via the radio signalling system of the need to stop.

Kiosks will be installed at Scotscalder, Altnabreac, Kinbrace, Kildonan, Dunrobin Castle, Rogart, Invershin and Culrain. All of these are lesser used stations and classed request stops.

This new equipment is planned to go live across all eight stations from summer 2022. Scotscalder will be used as a trial location where a period of dual running will extensively test the reliability of the enhanced system prior to it being rolled-out.

As well as the installation of the ‘request to stop kiosks’ Network Rail will also upgrade existing radio communication masts and antenna and install new equipment at Muir of Ord and Wick stations to enhance radio coverage.
