Closure for Bank station capacity upgrade work

-

A 17-week closure of the Northern Line’s Bank branch between Kennington and Moorgate began on January 15, as part of the £700 million project to increase capacity at Bank Tube station.

The Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project began in

2016 and has involved the construction of new Northern Line tunnels and a platform, as well as a new passenger concourse. Once completed in mid-May, passengers at the station will have step-free access to Northern Line services.

Transport for London says that, as well as a new station entrance on Cannon Street, there will also be more direct routes within the station and improvements for reaching DLR platforms.

The closure will allow engineers to connect the new tunnels to the existing route, install track and complete the fit-out of the new parts of the station. To minimise future disruption, refurbishment work at Borough and enabling works for the planned upgrading of Elephant & Castle station will also take place while the stretch of line is shut.

A reduced service will operate between Camden Town and Moorgate during the closure, but on the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line there will be an enhanced peak time frequency with trains running every two minutes. Bus route No. 733 OvalFinsbury Square will run every seven-eight minutes on weekdays.
