Reconstruction of cabin and track at Maam Cross begins

-

WORK commenced before Christmas on the reconstruction of the former Maam Cross signal cabin on the Connemara Railway Project, following agreement by Failte Ireland, the operating name of the National Tourism Development Authority of the Republic of Ireland, to fund its reconstruction. The base is still extant at the eastern end of the former up platform and should be completed by the end of March. At the end of December, the first 5ft 3in track was laid into one of the sheds in preparation for the arrival of the first items of rolling stock due to arrive in early spring. The formation was also prepared on the former up loop in advance of tracklaying scheduled for the end of January. The temporary 3ft gauge pop-up railway will be removed.
