-

A SOUTHEASTERN Class 707 electric multiple unit has been named in memory of former cabinet minister and Old Bexley & Sidcup MP James Brokenshire, who died last October of lung cancer.

Mr Brokenshire, who was 53, was a prominent campaigner for new trains and local rail improvements.

The name on ‘CityBeam’branded unit No. 707005 was unveiled at a ceremony on January 31 at Cannon Street station in London attended by Mr Brokenshire’s wife Cathy and Rail Minister Wendy Morton, who said that the ceremony paid tribute to his years of committed hard work.

Describing him as Southeastern’s “biggest advocate” in the push for better trains and services, the company’s managing director Steve White added: “In 2019,

James was one of the MPs on our network who made representations to the Secretary of State to secure new rolling stock and now customers will be reminded of the contribution James made when they see this modern train arriving at their station.”
