Business case for Derry phase 3 to look at more stations
NI Executive Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon announced the completion of the feasibility study she commissioned in November 2020, on the Phase 3 of the
£30 million Derry/Londonderry upgrade.
Originally due to be completed by 2021 it was to involve the complete re-lay of the track between Castlerock and Eglinton, but was not funded because of the collapse of the NI Assembly in 2017.
Ms Mallon also commissioned the study to examine the viability of establishing additional stops on the line and access potential park and ride facilities at Strathfoyle, City of Derry Airport and Ballykelly, with the potential to introduce a half-hourly service frequency.
Ms Mallon said: “Last year I committed to a new feasibility study to get Phase 3 of the Derry to Coleraine rail line back on track, and ring-fenced funding for that work to be done at pace.
“I am pleased to announce that the feasibility study is now complete and a business case for this important project is currently being prepared, and it will be subject to the necessary approval processes.”
