LONDON’S GREAT RAILWAY STATIONS & LONDON’S RAILWAY TERMINI
■ London’s Great Railway Stations By Oliver Green, Photography by Benjamin Graham
■ London’s Railway Termini
By Kevin Nixon and Peter Lloyd
THE phrase ‘two come along at once’ was part of an old saying about London buses. In this case, it also applies to books on the capital’s railway stations.
Both of these recent ‘coffee table’ format publications use their size to celebrate their subject with outstanding photography. While the pictures will undoubtedly draw you in, there is a comprehensive written account too.
With text by former London Transport Museum head curator Oliver Green and imagery from photography tutor and 2017 UK Landscape Photographer of the Year Benjamin Graham, London’s Great Railway Stations sets the scene by reminding us that ‘London has more main line railway stations than any other city in the world’. That said, it confines itself to 13 of the best known, which it features in detail befitting of their importance and history.
In London’s Railway Termini, architectural writer Peter Lloyd introduces each chapter of photographs from Kevin Nixon, an established professional photographer with a passion for architectural shots. While the text is more succinct than the other title, and it covers the same stations (Blackfriars, Cannon Street, Charing Cross, Euston, Fenchurch Street, King’s Cross, Liverpool Street, London Bridge, Marylebone, Paddington, St Pancras, Victoria and Waterloo), once again, there is no shortage of engaging illustrations.
Both publications offer the reader an excellent ‘virtual tour’ of the locations. GP
