The life and times of D212 Aureol
By Paul Hill THE author is chairman of the Class 40 Appeal and has been involved with No. D212 (40012) Aureol since the locomotive was purchased from British Rail in 1988, and arrived at the Midland Railway Centre the following year.
This book is a really comprehensive and detailed history of the third production English Electric Type 4 (after the initial batch of ten), which entered BR service in May 1959 from EE’s Vulcan Foundry Works. All aspects of the locomotive’s main line and departmental service with BR are dealt with, together with the massive restoration project that preceded its working life as a popular preserved locomotive.
The book is lavishly illustrated with both colour and monochrome images that are reproduced to a high standard in keeping with the exceptional quality of this locomotive’s history and portrait.
This publication is a mine of information about a significant ‘first-generation’
main line diesel loco. It is recommended strongly to all with an interest in our railway history and early production main line diesel locomotives. RSS
