The Railway Magazine

All aboard! Remembering Britain’s Railways

-

By Julian Holland THE author is well known for his coffee-table style railway books, and this latest addition is very similar to his previous publications.

This volume covers around 120 topics, ranging from narrow gauge lines to the effects of Beeching, famous classes both steam and diesel, and obscure locations. Each topic is covered in one or two pages and is well illustrated.

However, the information lacks depth and will probably offer very little that the serious enthusiast does not already know. So, who will this publication appeal to? Two groups spring to mind for your reviewer: firstly, someone new to the hobby whose knowledge of railways is limited could certainly quickly gain knowledge of the past history of Britain’s railways; and secondly, another group of readers could be school children who seek information for project work.

At £30 this is not a cheap publication, and as such could probably have a limited readership. AB
