NZ withdrawal fears

-

I WAS shocked to read in your March issue that the future of long distance passenger trains in New Zealand is under threat. In 2011, my partner and I travelled from Christchurch to Picton on a glorious day on a glorious train. One of the coaches was open air with the Pacific Ocean on the right, fabulous scenery to the left, and whales in the distance – what an experience! The ferry crossing to our connection on North Island was a joy, and the Art Deco station at Wellington quite marvellous.

At the rear of the train from Wellington to Auckland is the observation coach, which affords tremendous views of the stunning scenery en route. On board food and drink was delicious plus just enough commentary to keep one informed without being relentless. But the main thing to remember is this; these trains are service trains and all people use them. It’s a relaxing way to view and travel around this wonderful country. For the life of me I can’t understand why they would wish to permanently remove such a prime asset.
