Scottish ‘Green Freeports’ announcement welcomed
MOSSEND International Railfreight Park (MIRP) has welcomed an agreement reached by the Scottish and UK Governments to create two ‘Green Freeports’ in Scotland. Applicants for the status will be required to contribute to what ministers at Holyrood describe as a “just transition to net-zero emissions by 2045, delivering net-zero benefits and creating new green jobs”. In a statement following the announcement, MIRP, which is operated by Peter D Stirling Ltd said: “As Scotland’s largest international multi-modal rail freight park, we hope to see the huge economic benefits, employment opportunities and possibilities for redevelopment that might arise, and look forward to hearing of the next steps to get these sites up and running.” When completed, the £260 million multi-modal facility alongside the West Coast Main Line, described as Scotland’s first inland dry port, will provide 2.2 million square feet of on-site storage space and an all-electric railhead including eight new 775-metre sidings.
