ETCS signalling commissioned to Moorgate

THE Mayday bank holiday saw the commissioning of ETCS (European Train Control System) on the Northern city line between Finsbury Park and Moorgate. Use of the digital signalling system is a first step which will see large sections of the East Coast Main Line operated under ETCS in future years. ■ Meanwhile work to retro-fit ETCS to the current fleet has begun using Grand Central DMU No. 180108 William Shakespeare, which has been undergoing extensive testing at Network Rail’s Rail Innovation & Development Centre at Old Dalby, where ETCS trackside equipment has been installed.
