PUTTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT (RM MAY)

-

■ THE answer to 32 across in the May edition crossword is wrong. The longest tunnel wholly in Wales is not the abandoned Rhondda tunnel (at 3148m) but the very much alive and working Blaenau Ffestiniog tunnel on the Conwy Valley line. The length varies according to what source is accessed but 2 miles 333 yards (3725m) seems the most authoritative.

Thanks also to Martin Elson and David Lloyd-Roberts for spotting this – Ed.

■ WITH reference to the news about the GWSR gala (May issue) you say No. 34028 was the first

Light Pacific Bulleid to be rebuilt, in 1958. But this was in fact

No. 34005 Barnstaple, rebuilt June 1957, which may be the reason it was chosen to be the Hornby Dublo model. However, No. 34028 was the first rebuilt Light Pacific to be withdrawn (in May 1964).

Thanks also to Bill Southgate and Donald Syme for pointing this out – Ed.

■ THE Isle of Grain line passenger service was withdrawn in 1961 not 1968.
