Dean Forest Pannier on course for autumn return

-

WR 0-6-0PT No. 9681 could be back in action by the autumn, the Dean Forest Loco Group (DFLG) has told The RM.

A steaming up trial was carried out on May 6, the boiler reaching full pressure without any issues – and it went on to pass its steam test on May 12.

The boiler was due to be craned back into frames in mid-May with final reassembly planned to begin in earnest.

“Successfully getting the boiler up to steam pressure was a landmark moment,” said DFLG spokesman Josh Watkins.

“This is testament to the hard work carried out by contractor Western Steam Engineering at Norchard, ably assisted by our small team of engineering volunteers who have worked to bring No. 9681 back.”

The 1949-built Pannier last ran in October 2013. As part of the overhaul, it has received a new cab and bunker, while the tanks have been refurbished.

With the ‘bottom end’ finished in late 2021, it is now hoped the loco can rejoin the Dean Forest Railway’s (DFR) roster by the autumn. It will then work alongside DFLG’s GWR ‘Small Prairier’ No. 5541.

Once the restoration of GWR Toad van No. 17488 is finished, it is planned to focus on the group’s other WR Pannier, No. 9682.

“We are keen to have two consecutively numbered

Panniers in service together,” added Mr Watkins. “However,

No. 9682 requires a number of missing parts.”

Previously owned by the now closed GWR Preservation Group, No. 9682 was taken out of service in June 2009 and returned to its then home at Southall. In autumn 2018, thieves stole parts belonging to the loco from a stores van at the West London site. The loco was subsequently bought by the DFLG.

Funds are currently being raised for the purchase of brake valve castings.

Mr Watkins concluded: “We are a small team. Volunteers and supporters are welcome to join us.” For details, visit www. deanforestlocogroup.org/
