Battery locomotives for Brazilian iron ore railway

BRAZIL’S major iron ore mining and railway operating firm Vale has taken delivery of a new all battery six-axle heavy freight loco built in China by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Company. Vale already had a 2.4MW battery electric locomotive supplied by American firm Progress Rail. The EMD Joule locomotive as it is branded by Progress Rail, has been in use since mid2021. The CRRC loco which is equipped with 1000kWh worth of lithium batteries, will be used on Vale’s Carajás Railway.
