King Edward I edges towards steam test

-

VOLUNTEERS from the 6024 Preservation Society Ltd are working towards an in-frames steam test for GWR 4-6-0

No. 6024 King Edward I at the West Somerset Railway, Minehead – although a date remains to be set.

In recent months, all the boiler cladding has been attached. However, it will only be finalised once the boiler has been steam tested to ensure the fit is correct for a ‘hot’ state. The firebox topsheet was lifted on with a crane and the cab roof was removed to allow outstanding tasks – electrical and painting – to be undertaken, while also giving easier access during the steam test.

The final pieces of electrical work are due to be completed in two blocks in August – first the power systems, then the safety systems.

The last major mechanical task is finishing brakegear overhaul which started some time ago and was paused but is now being dealt with in earnest. A host of smaller tasks remain outstanding – such as fettling the damper door fits.

Painting is an on-going task, as is pipework – including that in the cab and under loco pipes for the brakes.
