Network gains with Northern ‘Intelligent Train’ technology

-

NORTHERN has begun a programme to equip its 345-strong fleet of trains with systems which will monitor and log information ranging from potential infrastructure problems to anti-social behaviour.

Using a light detection and radar scanning process (LiDAR), cameras mounted on the trains will be able to identify problems such as loose bricks in a tunnel roof.

Data

Where trains encounter roughriding track, data including

GPS coordinates will be sent to maintenance teams.

On board sensors will also be able to spot potential for energy saving, such as where platform lights have been left on during the daytime.

Thermal imaging will monitor loads and live on board CCTV will be available for the British Transport Police in the event of safety or security concerns.
