EDINBURGH TURNTABLE UNCOVERED:

-

The remains of a turntable at St Margaret’s depot and works to the east of Edinburgh have been uncovered in a car park during the regeneration of Meadowbank Sports Centre. The site is earmarked for new housing, but groundwork includes excavating the former railway lands alongside the East Coast Main Line. The 65ft (20m) diameter turntable is said to be one of the earliest examples of its kind and a rare archaeological survival. It is hoped that some of it will remain on show as part of the housing development. St Margaret’s was one of the largest works in Scotland, dating back to 1846 when the North British Railway opened its line from Edinburgh to Berwick.
