Tornado out until 2023
More work found to be required than expected during overhaul.
THE A1 Steam Locomotive Trust (A1SLT) says its flagship Pacific No. 60163 Tornado is now expected to return to service in time for the main season in 2023. In a statement, the A1SLT said: “After running over 130,000 miles since first steaming in 2008, it was inevitable that this new-build locomotive would at some stage start to exhibit signs of wear and tear. “During the overhaul we have undertaken work on frames, cylinders, new tyres and various sub-assemblies. Additionally, there has been a requirement to refurbish Tornado’s existing boiler, as the first of the new boilers had been delayed at DB Meiningen due to the effects of Covid-19 on German industry. “At the same time, we have also been preparing for the fitment of ETCS (European Train Control System, for in-cab signalling) funded by the East Coast Digital Programme. Work on the ETCS preparations has also taken longer than anticipated, although this aspect does not affect the trust financially. We now look forward to a full season of operations in 2023.” Tornado will be tested on the Great Central Railway in early January, having been fully fitted with ETCS equipment before undertaking main line tests. In February, the 4-6-2 is due to move to a Network Rail test centre for ETCS dynamic testing before taking up its railtour duties. After being fitted with new tyres by South Devon Railway Engineering, the driving wheels have been returned to Locomotive Maintenance Services, Loughborough. The wheels will be painted and lined before fitting on the loco. ■ The A1SLT has signed an agreement with DB Cargo UK Ltd to operate steam-hauled charter trains for an initial three-year period with options for further extensions using Tornado. The contract also covers the initial testing and commissioning of new ‘P2’ No. 2007 Prince of Wales.
