Moving Ukrainian grain by rail

- Rev Rod Pierce By email

IN the August issue of The RM, two of your correspondents suggested that the broad gauge railway from Ukraine into central Poland (the LHS) could be used as a means of exporting grain from Ukraine. I can confirm, having visited this line at Zamosc with a railway enthusiast group on August 1, that this single track line with passing places is currently working to capacity, and the train hauled by ST44 Class Nos. 2034+2026 (pictured) did indeed include a number of grain wagons and other covered wagons within its consist.

The main problem with exporting volumes of grain this way is the shortage of suitable grain wagons, as well as a lack of grain silos and unloading facilities on this line.
