Leek’d information
THE North Staffordshire Railway Company is trying to piece together the final steam operations to/from Leek under British Railways in the 1960s.
It has learned that BR No. 75035 hauled the last workmen's trains into Leek on January 2, 1965 – bringing an end to passenger traffic – but parcel traffic continued to serve the town, with steam still available in the area until August 1967.
A record shot of an unidentified ‘Black Five’ shunting in June 1967 has been received (shown here), while it is thought various Standard ‘4MTs’ appeared in 1967.
■ Sadly, the train register from Leek Brook Junction signal box for the period has not made it into the NSRC archive collection – nor any traffic records from Stoke Shed, which organised loco duties in the area until August 1967.
