Steam loco highlight for Glasgow Central tour?

-

ONGOING discussions between the Museum of Scottish Railways in Bo’ness and Network Rail at Glasgow Central could pave the way for a steam loco to be placed at a disused platform at the low level section of the station.

Public tours around hidden sections of Glasgow Central have proved extremely popular and are highly acclaimed, and placing 0-4-0ST No. 2203 Kelton Fell would add a new facet to the tours. More so, as the loco was built in Glasgow by Neilson in 1876, and examples of the design were also bought by both the Caledonian and North British Railways.

Kelton Fell was delivered new to William Baird & Co at Gartsherrie Ironworks. After working in Cumberland and at several Scottish collieries, it was donated by the National Coal Board to the Scottish Railway Preservation Society in 1968.

The derelict platform at Glasgow Central, unused for 60 years, has been cleared of vegetation and rubbish, and the proposal is to include gaseffect lighting, sound effects, holograms and wall projection to create the Victorian atmosphere.

Track would come from the Levenmouth line which is being rebuilt. Talks are also taking place with regard to the loan of a 1930s carriage to display with the saddle tank once external restoration has been completed.
