SWR Class 458s are Widnes-bound
THE first two South Western Railway Class 458 electric multiple units have arrived at Alstom’s train modernisation centre in Widnes for refurbishment, as part of a £25 million deal agreed last year with rolling stock owner Porterbrook.
A total of 28 units, which are being retained by SWR until 2027, will be upgraded as part of the programme.
The work includes restoring their original 100 miles per hour capability and improving existing acceleration as well as modifying interiors to make them more suitable for longer distance use.
Nos. 458507 and 458517 were confirmed to be at the site in mid-August.
