Generating lower emissions
A CLEAN air gas engine (CAGE) generator being trialled by HS2 contractor Mace Dragados at Euston has exceeded expectations for lowering emissions.
Tests on the liquefied petroleum gas-powered unit indicated a reduction of up to 95% in nitrogen-oxide and exhaust particulates compared to an equivalent diesel-fuelled system.
HS2 says “dramatic” emissions reductions have also resulted from using a smaller than usual diesel engine paired with an energy storing flywheel system to operate a tower crane at the station approaches.
