One-time David Shepherd loco moves from Locomotion to York

EXCAPE Government Railway No. 390, later

South African Railways No. 993, 1896-vintage 3ft 6in gauge Sharpe Stewart 4-8-0 has been relocated from Locomotion, Shildon to The Great Hall at the NRM in York.

The loco ended its working life on the Zambezi Sawmills Railway (also known as the Mulobezi Railway) and came into the ownership of artist the late David Shepherd who repatriate­d it in 1975.

After display at Whipsnade, Cranmore (East Somerset Railway) and the British Empire & Commonweal­th Museum at Bristol Temple Meads, it was donated to the NRM in 2004. It went on public display at Locomotion in February 2012.
