GCR diesel gala ‘downgraded’ to a running weekend

THE Great Central Railway’s previously announced September 2-4 diesel gala was changed to a ‘diesel running weekend’ due to a shortage of visiting locos. Home fleet locos, Nos. D123, D6700, 37714

Cardiff Canton and D5185 ran to a special timetable, but with standard fares.

Class 25, Sulzer Type 2 No. D5185

(25035), made its final appearance before undergoing an overhaul.

There was a special guest however, Derby Lightweigh­t diesel railcar No. M79900

‘Iris’, appearing courtesy the Ecclesbour­ne Valley Railway. It was also due to run during the GCR’s September 9-11 railcar weekend.

This follows repair and a full repaint in National Coal Board (NCB) livery as it appeared in the 1970s, prior to preservati­on. Built at BR Darlington Works in 1961, it was withdrawn in 1970, before TOPS renumberin­g and was sold to the NCB for use at Betteshang­er Colliery, Kent. It later went to Nailstone Colliery, Leicesters­hire and then to the GCR for preservati­on in 1980.
