Barmouth viaduct’s £30m upgrade enters final phases
THE final phases of the
£30m project to refurbish Barmouth’s Grade II* listed viaduct got underway in September.
Restoration of the metallic elements was originally planned to take place in one go this autumn, but is now being split across the next two years in order to reduce the impact on rail services and the community.
The line between Machynlleth and Pwllheli closed on September 11 and will reopen on
October 15, before closing again on November 13 and reopening on December 10.
During the line closures, replacement bus services will run – while the footpath across the viaduct will be open for the first five-week period but closed during November and December. Dates for working on the viaduct during 2023 are still being finalised.
Further upgrades of some of the timber elements are also being undertaken, the north abutments have been strengthened and new track has been laid.
Network Rail will be taking advantage of the autumn closure to complete other work on the Cambrian Line, including new track at Fegla Fach and Pwllheli station.
