‘Complicated’ repairs necessary on Bury line
TRANSPORT for Greater Manchester’s head of Metrolink Danny Vaughan has warned that a temporary line closure will be required in order to complete repairs to a tunnel at Whitefield.
The structure, which dates from 1876, is part of the former heavy rail route between Manchester Victoria and Bury, converted to tram operation in 1992.
Cracking to a support beam was discovered in March and Mr Vaughan says “extremely complicated” repairs will be necessary, involving the diversion of utilities.
A timeframe for the closure is expected once a contractor has been appointed to carry out the work.
